A tent's hydrostatic head rating is only one piece of staying dry — most real-world leaks happen at seams, zippers, and pitch quality, not through the coated fabric itself. This checklist covers what to check before, during, and after pitching in rain.

The one thing to know: Hydrostatic head, measured in millimeters, is how much water pressure a fabric can resist before leaking, tested by how tall a water column it holds before seeping through. Rough real-world bands: under ~1,000mm is showerproof at best; ~1,500-2,000mm handles moderate, steady rain; 3,000mm+ starts to handle sustained heavy rain and puddling; and technical mountaineering shells/floors often exceed 5,000-10,000mm. A tent floor should generally rate higher than its fly, since you sit and kneel directly on it, compressing water against the fabric.
