R-value measures a sleeping pad's resistance to heat loss into the ground, and it is additive when pads are stacked — a 2.6 R-value foam pad under a 4.2 R-value inflatable gives a combined ~6.8, a real winter-camping strategy. Sleeping bag temperature ratings

Bags tested to ISO 23537 (successor to EN 13537) publish two numbers: a comfort rating (average cold-sleeping woman, relaxed) and a lower limit rating (average warm-sleeping man, curled, at the edge of tolerable cold).
